TENT POLE: A MUSICAL JAMBOREE

ANNOUNCES MORE GOLD!

BLACK LIPS, CHARLEY CROCKETT and more added to the bill, joining indie icons PAVEMENT + friends

SAT 4 MARCH – MT DUNEED ESTATE, WADAWURRUNG (GEELONG)

We planted our Tent Pole into the ground in September … and now it just got bigger!

Tent Pole: A Musical Jamboree today unleashes its second artist announcement, continuing their colourful curation with Texan blues alt-country singer-songwriter CHARLEY CROCKETT and his band, US garage punk rockers BLACK LIPS, Melbourne punk trio legends MOD CON, power pop rockers THE PRIZE and Bellarine-based psychedelic dream pop, prog rockers SIRENS being added to the already jam-packed bill.

With their Melbourne Palais Theatre show now sold out, don’t miss your last chance to see one of the most influential bands to come out of the American underground in the past three decades, US indie icons PAVEMENT playing the final show of their Australian tour at Tent Pole.

They join indie rock royalty SPIDERBAIT, legendary Geelong locals MAGIC DIRT, alt-pop-rock faves FLOODLIGHTS, punk trio CLAMM, San Diego rock’n’soulers THE SCHIZOPHONICS, and NT rockers BLACK ROCK BAND.

With a bill teeming with revered, respected and rising stars, the new Surf Coast concert event will turn the festival experience on its head with a line-up curated for maximum enjoyment over two stages.

The inaugural event is taking place at Geelong’s Mt Duneed Estate, on their newly developed Top Paddock site, on Saturday 4 March.

Auslan Stage Left, a national organisation specialising in the arts and performance interpreting, will be at the event, providing access for the Deaf Community.

Tent Pole is the first collaboration between Roundhouse Entertainment (the team behind Australia’s iconic outdoor summer concert series a day on the green), Love Police (led by music maverick Brian ‘BT’ Taranto, promoter of excellent international tours Out On The Weekend & Boogie, merch guru, book publisher and record label wiz) and Johann Ponniah, founder of I OH YOU (home to one of the country’s most successful independent record labels). They are combining their decades of expertise in booking the finest bands from all over the globe to give music fans the ultimate experience.

In a celebration of art, music and retro road trips, OK Motels will take over the second stage, curating a line-up that will embrace their unique love of all-things rural and retro. And with a nostalgic nod to the ’70s – Kate Berry, the founder and photographer behind everyone’s favourite Instagram account – with Shaun Adams, will produce a very OK program celebrating music, nostalgia and the great Aussie road trek.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of seminal 1992 debut album Slanted and Enchanted, PAVEMENT – who last toured Australia in 2010 – will feature the unbeatable line-up of Stephen Malkmus, Scott ‘Spiral Stairs’ Kannberg, Mark Ibold, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West.

Since topping 1996’s triple j Hottest 100 with Buy Me A Pony (the first Australian band to do so), seven studio albums and combined sales of more than one million units and 500 million streams, SPIDERBAIT – Kram, Janet and Whitt – have consolidated their status as national rock treasures.

With a voice as smooth as silk – and ancestory that traces back to American folk hero Davy Crockett – Texan singer-songwriter CHARLEY CROCKETT will make his highly anticipated Australian debut next March when he and his band bring their unique rootsy take on Americana music to audiences down under.

BLACK LIPS will tear up the Tent Pole stage with their raucous southern-fried, garage punk, sonic glory. Considered one of the best live acts around today, their recent 10th studio album, Apocalypse Love, shows they’re definitely not slowing down as they enter their third decade.

Geelong’s own MAGIC DIRT have cemented their status as one of Australia’s best loved and highly respected bands. The seminal alternative rock band fronted by Adalita are back on the road blitzing the live music scene once again.

Powerful, dynamic, raw, honest and intimate, Melbourne quartet FLOODLIGHTS meld ’80s alternative rock with ’90s New Zealand jangle-pop. The indie pop-rockers gained global attention in 2019 with Backyard and their critically acclaimed debut album in 2020, From a View.

CLAMM may not be the first group to venture out into the fuzzy Australian wilderness, but they might just be the best,” declared DIY Mag. Combining a frenetic pace with thought-provoking lyrics, the Melbourne punk power trio hope to achieve “community, creativity and catharsis” through their music.

US garage duo THE SCHIZOPHONICS, hailed by Spotify as the “wildest live band in America”, play “fuzzy, psychedelic rock mixed with nasty funk, played with energy, passion and freakiness”. Their live set taps into the same unstoppable combination of rock 'n' roll energy and showmanship that fuelled The MC5, James Brown, Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, and The Sonics.

BLACK ROCK BAND are a talented and outspoken rock outfit out of NT’s Kakadu, West Arnhem Land. The band draws on their deep musical family history and celebrate their connection to country, fighting for social justice and the future they want to see for the next generation.

Melbourne’s grungy post-punk trio MOD CON released their debut album Modern Convenience in 2018 with NME Australia calling it, “One of the most inventive, attention-grabbing local debuts in recent memory.” This was followed by last year’s hotly anticipated Modern Condition, charting a course through ’60s garage-surf rock, late ’70s post-punk and ’90s melodic punk-pop.

All eyes will be on THE PRIZE when they bring their power pop, proto-punk and pub rock sound to Tent Pole’s OK Motels stage. Three guitars, five voices and joyous harmonies making some of the finest blend of power pop and rock ‘n’ roll, their dynamic live show delivers harmonies, hooks and energy with melody to burn.

Making waves on the Surf Coast are Bellarine-based, psychedelic dream-pop band SIRENS, a 4-piece girl group bringing together a combination of psychedelic, progressive rock and dream pop music.

Prepare for iconic, indie, lo-fi, hi-fi, post-punk, alternative, renegade rock. Celebrating an eclectic mix of artists, while showcasing a musically diverse mix of seminal and highly influential international and Aussie acts, as well as local, up-and-coming and emerging artists. So magnificent, it will take two stages to contain them all! Arrive early and discover your next favourite band!

Tent Pole: A Musical Jamboree. Moments of magic to excite all palates. Twelve acts. Two stages. And a no-holds-barred attack on your aural senses. Come for the music, stay for the experience.

ARTIST BIOS

BLACK LIPS
Playing garage-flavoured punk rock with a Southern accent, the BLACK LIPS are an Atlanta-based combo who developed a reputation as one of Georgia’s most distinctive bands. Formed in 1999, the band’s sound manages to be muscular and ramshackle at the same time, reinforcing the dark, buzzy tone of their performances. The murky frenzy of their early work was best documented on 2005's Let It Bloom and 2007's Good Bad Not Evil, and an over-the-top live show was preserved on 2007's Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo. The band experimented with cleaner studio sounds on 2011's Arabia Mountain (produced by Mark Ronson) and 2014's Underneath The Rainbow (co-produced by the Black Keys' Patrick Carney) and added funk, hip-hop, and classic pop accents to the swampy tone of 2022's Apocalypse Love, a stylistically diverse set that saw them filtering funk, hip-hop, '60s-style pop and vintage R&B through their garage rock formula.

BLACK ROCK BAND
A voice for culture, family and social justice while incorporating rich cultural sounds with a heavy rock style, BLACK ROCK BAND are a talented and outspoken rock outfit out of NT’s Kakadu, West Arnhem Land. The band draws on their deep musical family history and celebrate their connection to country, fighting for social justice and the future they want to see for the next generation, while singing about contemporary social and political issues reflecting their experiences as First Nations people. Their second album Identity reflected the band’s evolving sound and they have built a reputation for lively shows that excite and engage audiences, with Double J declaring, “No one who has ever seen Black Rock Band play live has any doubt that they are one of the most energetic, passionate, proficient and endearing live forces in the country.”

CHARLEY CROCKETT
Texan blues, country and Americana singer, guitarist and songwriter, CHARLEY CROCKETT was originally a blues singer, straying into other American roots music incorporating soul, gospel and country, fusing all these sounds into a distinctive, earthy signature. Charley enlivens country music by looking back for inspiration and crafting his own signature sound through his own songs and the songs of others, weaving old school blues, R&B, soul, Cajun, western swing and other classic touchstones with country, creating his own singular “Gulf & Western” sound. Melissa Goldberg from CMT (Country Music Channel) said: “There’s a magic to Charley Crockett. You hear it in his recordings and live shows, and you see it when he walks in the room.” Prolific and charismatic, CHARLEY CROCKETT released two albums in 2022, Lil G.L. Presents: Jukebox Charley and The Man From Waco.

CLAMM
Melbourne punk power trio CLAMM hope to achieve “community, creativity and catharsis” through their music, while exploring themes of “confusion of what it is to be a young person trying to live an honourable life in this f**cked up world, navigating systems of power and oppression while retaining a healthy sense of self and mental health”. Their recent second album Care – earning a 4-star review from NME Australia – is bigger, louder and darker than their 2020 debut Beseech Me, featuring singles Bit Much and Monday. With recording engineer Nao Anzai (NO ZU, Cash Savage, Rolling Blackouts) adding synth to many of the record’s big, loud and dark garage punk tunes, Care is their first album to feature the band’s newest member, bass player Maisie Everett, joining best friends Jack Summer and Miles Harding.

FLOODLIGHTS
FLOODLIGHTS make raw, honest, dynamic rock music that melds ’80s alternative rock with ’90s New Zealand jangle-pop. Their live performance is intimate at times, intertwined with large powerful outbursts. In 2019 their sold-out self-released debut 10” vinyl EP Backyard, containing the single Nullarbor, gained them an abundance of global attention. With a reissue of the EP from Spunk Records, and release of their 2020 debut LP From a View, the band continued to gain critical acclaim. Recently the band played sell out shows across the nation, from Noosa to Geelong and a sold-out Secret Sound’s Flood Aid show at the Bangalow Town Hall. FLOODLIGHTS are set to release their follow up album in early 2023.

MAGIC DIRT
MAGIC DIRT
, the seminal alternative rock band fronted by Adalita, formed in Geelong in 1991. It wasn't long before the band were packing out pubs in Melbourne and supporting bands like Pavement, Sonic Youth, Hole and Dinosaur Jr. Their 1994 EP, Life Was Better, debuted at Number 1 on the alternative charts. This was followed by their Top 10 debut album in 1996, Friends In Danger, and then by the blistering Young And Full Of The Devil (1998). A further 6 studio albums followed, along with 9 ARIA Award nominations. After the devastating loss of founding member and bassist Dean Turner in 2009 the band went on an indefinite hiatus but are back on the road blitzing the live music circuit in honour of their bandmate, and cementing their status as one of Australia’s best loved and highly respected bands.

MOD CON
Melbourne’s MOD CON released their debut album Modern Convenience in 2018 with NME Australia calling it, “One of the most inventive, attention-grabbing local debuts in recent memory.” This was followed by last year’s highly anticipated Modern Condition, charting a course through ’60s garage-surf rock, late ’70s post-punk and ’90s melodic punk-pop. The grungy post-punk trio were nominated for an AIR Award in 2022, as well as receiving nominations for numerous Music Victoria Awards since 2018 with Erica Dunn winning the Best Female Musician award in 2019. NME Australia said in 2021, “If Ammo sounds like the most hooky, sing-along Sleater-Kinney songs, then the surfer-guitar and pummelling drums of Learner In An Alpha raise the ghosts of the B-52s for a raucous party.”

PAVEMENT
In their decade-long early career, PAVEMENT released five era-defining albums – Slanted And Enchanted (1992), Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten The Corners (1997) and Terror Twilight (1999) – before disbanding in 1999. Hailed by music critic Robert Christgau as “the finest rock band of the ’90s”, Pavement’s 2010 reunion saw them play four sold out benefit shows in NYC’s Central Park, visit Australia, and top bills of festivals including Coachella, Reading & Leeds, Primavera Sound and Pitchfork. Cut Your Hair, Range Life, Gold Soundz, Stereo , Shady Lane, Spit On A Stranger … Pavement’s enduring influence was on show when they made their long-awaited live return at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound in June 2022, more than a decade since they last reunited.

THE PRIZE
Powerhouse rock and power pop combo THE PRIZE released their debut 4-track EP Wrong Side of Town in September after forming in 2021. Influenced by power pop, proto-punk and pub rock greats from The Nerves to Thin Lizzy, the Ramones to Todd Rundgren and Aussie icons like The Angels and Divinyls, the joyous new five-piece bring three guitars and five voices that harmonise together to make some of the finest blend of power pop and rock ‘n’ roll. Along with their dynamic live show, the band offer harmonies, hooks and energy with melody to burn. The band is the sum of each member’s musical inspirations and influences, creating an eclectic and colourful soundscape, with one mission: to bring it to a live audience. “Each track from their setlist could be its own single … 30 minutes of power pop bliss.” – What’s My Scene

THE SCHIZOPHONICS
San Diego’s THE SCHIZOPHONICS – formed in 2009 by singer/guitarist Pat Beers and drummer Lety Beers – “play fuzzy, psychedelic rock mixed with nasty funk, played with energy, passion and freakiness”. Tapping into the same unstoppable combination of rock 'n' roll energy and showmanship that fuelled The MC5, their wild live show is heavily influenced by artists like James Brown, Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, and The Sonics. In 2013 they were recruited as the back-up band for El Vez: The Mexican Elvis and his punk rock review. Shindig magazine describe the band’s live show, “Like watching some insane hybrid of Wayne Kramer, James Brown and the Tasmania devil!”. Winner of numerous San Diego Music Awards, the band have built up a formidable reputation around the world as an explosive live act. THE SCHIZOPHONICS are also committed to writing memorable songs, with their latest album Hoof It out now.

SIRENS
SIRENS is a 4-piece girl group collective bringing together a combination of psychedelic, progressive rock and dream pop music that makes you feel instantly immersed in their world. The magical blend of these genres in their dreamy soundscapes, paired with a theatrical touch on stage, makes SIRENS truly stand out. The Bellarine-based psychedelic dream-pop band released their enchanting self-titled debut EP last year, produced by Bones and Jones’ Jasper Jolley.

SPIDERBAIT
One of Australia’s most beloved and exciting live bands, SPIDERBAIT have thrilled audiences for more than 30 years. With five Top 20 albums, two ARIA Awards, a massive number one anthem with the irrepressible Black Betty and topping 1996’s triple j Hottest 100 with Buy Me A Pony (the first Australian band to do so), the genre-busting trio have amassed a huge and loyal following. Even Stephen King is a fan! The author and uber music fan wrote about the band’s “great rip-ass, back-draft rock & roll”. It’s true to say that Kram, Janet and Whitt’s special musical alchemy is a wondrous thing. Earlier this year Spiderbait released Songs In The Key of J, celebrating Janet’s awesome catalogue of songs, featuring their latest single, My Car’s A UFO.
